[Summary]

Denmark is a supporting character in Hetalia, and part of the Nordic 5 group. He is the representative of of the Kingdom of Denmark (Danish: Kongeriget Danmark).

He does not have a canon human name. However, Himaruya had given a list of potential names for him.
:bulletred: Andersen
:bulletred: Christensen
:bulletred: Arnesen
:bulletred: Simon
:bulletred: Abel
:bulletred: Mikkel
:bulletred: Magnus
:bulletred: Bertram

Denmark does not have a canon human age.

Gender is male.

He doesn't have a confirmed date for his birthday.

Denmark's appearance consists of short, wild blonde hair, dark eyebrows, and drooping, blue eyes. His mouth was noted to be drawn rather big. He wears a long, black coat with red cuffs, a red shirt, black tie, red pants, and brown boots, as well as a small black hat. He is often shown carrying around an ax. In a 2011 blog post, Himaruya mentions that Denmark was "quite muscular."

Though he doesn't have a canon height, it is confirmed that he is the second tallest out of the Nordics.

(Top: Nordics of 2009; Bottom: Nordics of 2014 - the heights haven't changed.)

[Personality and Behavioural Study]

Denmark is said to be full of youthful vigour and humour, though he is very stubborn and doesn't listen very well to others. As a result, he is known to be bossy, controlling and demanding to the point that it's hard to get along with him. However, like Sweden, Denmark has since calmed down, and now puts his energy towards social services and creating furniture as mentioned in his Volume 4 profile. Regardless, he still somehow manages to get himself into trouble.

In pg. 2 of (No Longer Copy) Book of History Stuff I Can't Really Draw, regarding his "scary" appearance, it was stated that his really wild behaviour came from him being a sailor. However, once he started to live on land, he calmed down. At the end of Hetalia Christmas 2011, it was mentioned that once Denmark appeared in the main comics, he will have a frightening impression.

He declares himself to be the "King of Scandinavia" and is a heavy drinker. He is said to be carefree, but is actually a hard worker. His Volume 6 profile mentions that he's been very active in the cultivation of organic products as of late.

In Hetalia Fantasia 2, it's seen that he appears to have a certain priority for maintaining his own self-image as he opts to lie to Germany and Japan about the progress of his quest.

A 2011 blog post reveals that Denmark blatantly ignores offensive and aggressive social tones, maintaining a cheery demeanour. Although at first this is just first seen as his response to Norway's routine negativity, this reaction from Denmark is seen again in Hetaween 2011 during a forceful confrontation with Belarus when she throws a clothes hanger at him and declares that Russia's group will win the costume contest - he responds simply by wishing them luck, and remarking that he's eager to see their costumes.

The final part of Denmark's personality is rather intriguing to note. Despite being described as having a "scary" appearance, and being bossy and controlling, when someone shows negativity or aggression towards him, he blatantly puts it off while keeping his cheer.

This sort of mindset of a character is not really noticed much in other kinds of personas, but it is an interesting one, nonetheless.

Simply because usually when faced with aggression or negativity, regardless on whether or not if people ignore it or react, the emotions are usually quite negative, or irritated. However, in Denmark's case, he continues on to be cheerful and displays a positive attitude. This attitude is usually seen towards Norway, however it shows to be a constant and solid aspect of Denmark's personality, as it is demonstrated once more in Hetaween 2011.

(The strips can be found here.)

Belarus shows far more aggression in the confrontation by not only threatening Denmark with the statement "I'll tear your dick off!", but even threw a clothes hanger at him. Regardless, Denmark reacts rather positively to the situation, which noticeably confuses Belarus.

This sort of behaviour on Denmark's part is actually quite effective when it comes to how to diffuse a confrontation. The aggressor usually expects an equally negative or aggressive response, so to reply to them with a cheery disposition and a positive attitude would understandably surprise, shock and even disturb the aggressor due to the unexpected reaction.

Though admittedly, this sort of solution doesn't work all the time in confrontations, as Belarus seems even more irritated at Denmark's positive response.

There is then the question on why Denmark acts this way, followed up by the question on how he developed this sort of behaviour.

The question of why can be just to not get involved in some unnecessary conflict. It is mentioned that Denmark, despite having calmed down once he settled on land, still somehow finds himself into trouble as he works. If you get into trouble a lot, you'd probably want the situation to be gone quickly, and possibly, the only way to get it to stop, at least to Denmark anyway, is to simply maintain a positive attitude and keep going on. This, in turn, not only can shock the other party, but can also diffuse due to the surprising reaction the aggressor gets.

Additionally, one could add that this sort of attitude could also be a kind of mechanism for Denmark to the sudden conflict that arrives. However, whether it's a defense or coping mechanism to sudden confrontation can be debatable.
If a defense mechanism, it can be seen as a sort of form of assertiveness. Assertiveness is the emphasis of a person’s needs or thoughts in a manner that is respectful, direct and firm. Communication styles exist on a continuum ranging from passive to aggressive, with assertiveness falling neatly in between. People who are passive and communicate in a passive manner tend to be good listeners, but rarely speak up for themselves or their own needs in a relationship. People who are aggressive and communicate in an aggressive manner tend to be good leaders, but often at the expense of being able to listen empathetically to others and their ideas and needs. People who are assertive, on the other hand, strike a balance where they speak up for themselves, express their opinions or needs in a respectful yet firm manner, and listen when they are being spoken to.

Denmark certainly speaks his opinion quite clearly, but noticeably in Hetaween 2011, he wasn't ignorant of what Belarus was saying, as she declares that her brother, Russia's, costume will be the best. Denmark commences by saying positively that Russia must be "really something" and that he was looking forward to seeing them dress up.

At the same time, another interesting defense mechanism to take note is reaction formation. Reaction formation reduces anxiety by taking up the opposite feeling, impulse or behavior. An example of reaction formation would be treating someone you strongly dislike in an excessively friendly manner in order to hide your true feelings. Why do people behave this way? According to Freud, they are using reaction formation as a defense mechanism to hide their true feelings by behaving in the exact opposite manner.

It is an interesting one, but due to Denmark appearing to be more of a genuinely cheerful character, this sort of defense mechanism is probably not one a person can associate with him.

The final defense mechanism that can be interpreted for Denmark is also listed as a type of coping mechanism, and it's called humour. Humour is a type of adaptive defense mechanism, and is listed as being a positive. Humour is where an individual points out the amusing, ironic or funny aspects of the problem at hand, or "positive reframing," and it's typically used and thought to help deal with small failures.

Denmark is described as having both youthful vigour and humour outright. He also does note "Hmm, now that's funny!" though it can be taken as a taunt when Belarus declared that her group will win the costume competition. However, with his character, it could be possible that Denmark did genuinely find the remark funny. Regardless, this form of mechanism could end up back-firing due to improper phrasing and having a different idea of what's funny compared to the other person.

Humour was mentioned before to also be classed as not only a type of defense mechanism, but also a coping one. If coping mechanisms were to be taken from Denmark's behaviour, it's safe to say that he'd have a more adaptive coping mechanism. Adaptive mechanisms are where an individual reacts to external and internal stress in a more positive manner.

A coping mechanism that could fit to Denmark's behaviour is substitution. Substitution is when a person takes something of discomfort, and replace it with something else that does not lead to discomfort. This 'something' may be a range of items including a type of behaviour, a kind of context, or a physical item. Substitution is a form of avoidance, as people avoid difficulty by substitution comfort. It's not the same as displacement, which moves a behaviour from one target to another. People often use this strategy to put off things they'd rather not do.

Despite the fact he got insulted, threatened and a clothes hanger was thrown at him, Denmark reacted with a compliment and positivity. He tries to change the situation from a confrontation into a conversation or even a discussion - effectively substituting the context of the interaction. In retrospect, it can also be interpreted that Denmark would rather not want to engage in forms of negative social aggression.

Another answer that can be given for why he acts like this could be from experience with previous confrontations. Having lived for a while and going through tough events, he probably would have realized and understood that certain reactions and responses may work in certain situations. That, or he also could have just developed such response throughout his years.

Now, for the question on how he developed this sort of response to confrontation. Once more, one could interpret that it's because of his years of living. Due to his experiences - particularly with all the battle and combat, Denmark could have adapted this behaviour. Now that he's calmed down and doing different activities - social services, creating furniture, and cultivating organic products - he no longer probably wants to have any more social or behavioural negativity aimed in his direction. Hence why he responds more positively.

However, even though he responds positively in such situations, that doesn't mean he's a pushover. He does still have his image and pride as he had opted to lie to Germany and Japan when asked about his quest. It's just that in certain situations, he reacts in a certain way, much like other people. This is also seen again in the strip Magical Words for Denmark where, despite his fear of seeing Sweden walk across ice to reach him, he refused to back down or buckle due to his pride and not wanting to look uncool in front of Norway. He also is seen to like a good physical fight as he's challenged Sweden a number of times (though they attribute to his number of losses, too).

That saying so, with Denmark's behaviour , it can be attributed that he's more aware of events around him than what most give him credit for. He's usually associated as one of the characters who cannot read the atmosphere, or is clueless, however it is never stated there in his profile. It mentions that he's carefree and has difficulties listening to other people, but it never mentions lack of intelligence or inability to read the atmosphere as being part of his personality (whereas with characters like America and Spain, it's mentioned).

So in way, some can possibly interpret that Denmark is fully aware of events around him, and his response to that confrontation is his method of diffusing the situation without making it clear to others that he's very aware of the sudden threat.

Effectively, it's also an effective way to show he doesn't need assistance in such matters and could handle it himself.

[Relationships]

:bulletyellow: Finland
Finland lived with Denmark, but made the decision to flee with Sweden as he grew tired of being surrounded by stronger nations and wanted to be free as seen in the strip Su-san and I which adapted into Season 3, Episode 17 of the anime. Finland refers to him as Tanska ("Ta-san" in the original Japanese), which is the Finnish name for Denmark.

:bulletwhite: Iceland
Denmark states that he raised Iceland in Volume 6's strip, Meeting with the Nordics. He also considers himself to be an older brother towards him as mentioned in the Hetalia drama CD Hetalia Fantasia 2. In the strip The Wordy Nordic Comic, Denmark was excited to hear the result of Iceland's test. After learning of the promise that Norway and Iceland made where the latter had to address the former as "big brother", Denmark pokes fun at Iceland, but later asks him if he could call him "big brother", too.

:bulletblue: Norway
Norway is a childhood friend of Denmark's, who he feels rather close to and strongly about, believing that Norway sees him the same way as a "best friend." However, he is unaware of Norway's bluntness and subtle ways of teasing and insulting him. Norway frequently refers to him as anko, which is a term Himaruya has described as having a nuance like older brother or onii-chan, the familiar form of big brother, and having a classmate-like feeling. Historically, Denmark and Norway drifted apart after Norway became oppressed by a more powerful nation as mentioned in the strip Magical Words for Denmark in final notes. Subsequently, when Norway later entered into an alliance with Sweden, Denmark had sent him (Norway) a letter or something in which he threw a childish tantrum and cut their ties, after which his goodwill was decreased towards him. Despite Norway's apparent annoyance towards him, Finland has mentioned in Track 2 of the Nordic Drama CD that Norway spends a lot of time with Denmark.

:bulletblue: Sweden

Sweden lived with him for a long period of time, but after being unable to stand his behavior and lifestyle, finally snapped and rebelled, leaving him behind as mentioned by Finland in the strip Running Away with Su-san (Season 3, Episode 17). A set of strips on Himaruya's blog suggest that Denmark challenged Sweden a number of times, though they also suggest his defeats. Although their relationship hasn't been discussed much in modern times, Denmark does show concerned alarm for him during the 2012 Christmas event when he discovers Sweden knocked to the ground by Ladonia. Also during the event, he says that he thought it was cool that Sweden lived in a furniture store and said he wanted to try living in a house that was made of Lego. In Comic Birz Ep. 14, Denmark states that he and Sweden used to "beat the crap out of each other" frequently, but are now best buds.

[Addressing Complaints]

Warning: Emotions may run high ahead. It could turn rant-like and highly sarcastic with foul language - you have been warned.

:bulletred: He's stupid and a total idiot!
How about we look at his profiles? His profiles are as followed:

:bulletred: Volume 4 - A powerful big brother who, in the old days, was full of guts and fought with Sweden! Today, he's come to calm down considerably, and puts his strength into social services and making furniture!
:bulletred: Volume 5 - He is the fireball of energy of Northern Europe! He's optimistic and easy-going, sometimes a bit too much and gets into trouble! He appears to be minding his own business and is care-free, but he actually works hard!
:bulletred: Volume 6 - His house consists of 443 islands! He is the most lively of the Nordic nations. Sometimes so lively that it irritates the other nations... He is very active in the cultivation of organic products lately.

There is no mention of a lack of ability in reading the atmosphere or being clueless or naive. Denmark is described as being carefree. So before you make assumptions of something, at least have evidence or a reasonable idea behind your assumption. Otherwise, you look highly judgmental and pretty foolish.

:bulletred: He's a total pervert and sex maniac who submits the other Nordics by raping them!

Go back to the Relationships section and READ AGAIN.

He is NOT any of those things. He's really devoted to his fellow Nordics, and in return, they do actually care for him. Though it probably may not seem like it at first glance, but they truly do as they get worried about his whereabouts in the 2011 Hetalia Christmas strip, and their interactions. Hell, Denmark and Sweden have a pretty nice conversation where Denmark had even mentioned he liked how Sweden lived in a furniture store, and even mentions in Comic Birz Ep. 14 that the two of them, though they used to fight before, are now "best buds."

Noticeably, Sweden doesn't object to any of that.

Plus, again with this whole complaint about rape...do you even know what the word means? I sincerely doubt it since you continue to throw it around like an insensitive dumbass. It is a truly horrible and disgusting thing, and for you to just say that so easily and throw that around like it's nothing proves you're a truly disgusting person who deserves to get uppercut to the sun.

:bulletred: He's a dumb drunkard.

Again, actually no. It's mentioned that he's a heavy drinker not a drunkard. And before you bitch, yes, there actually is a difference between the two.

A heavy drinker is someone who drinks beyond the legal alcohol capacity. A drunkard, on the other hand, is someone who is habitually drunk.

Considering that Denmark is a nation, not a human, he most definitely would be able to exceed a human's capacity, so it's not out of place for him to be a heavy drinker. A person can drink a lot, but that doesn't mean that they will be drunk all the time. And really, Denmark has never been shown to drink in the strips.

Stop assuming things of people, and move along. Move, bitch, get outta the way~

:bulletred: I hate him - he has a big ego and doesn't shut up!
It's okay for you to hate a character or a pairing as long as your reasons make sense and are logical. Hating Denmark for having an ego is quite understandable as some people cannot stand people who have big egos and who brag. Hell, I absolutely loathe some pairings, but stop for a moment. Does your personal dislike/hate/loathing really give you the right to bitch at people who like the character or pairing?

Fuck no.

This complaint will probably stay on quite a number of them...so again, as I mention before: you're not special, I'm not special, nobody in this world is fucking special, so put a sock in it, and move along.

(If there are any more complaints, feel free to comment down below, and I'll add them in! :D (Big Grin))

[Do's and Don't's]

(You would make more friends if you stop tugging on their ears)
(Special guest appearance: France.)

Do's:
:bulletred:
Not portray Denmark as abusive to the other Nordics. He is quite devoted towards them.
:bulletred: Remember that he responds to aggressive social confrontations by blatantly ignoring it while maintaining a positive attitude.
:bulletred: Keep in mind that the above point only applies to negative and aggressive social confrontation. If it's a jab at his pride and self-image or a a challenge to a physical fight, he'd react differently.
:bulletred: Know that though cheery and lively, sometimes Denmark's liveliness causes irritation to others.
:bulletred: Remember he's a heavy drinker. Not a drunkard. Yes, there's a difference.
:bulletred: Not get pissy at people who like him or hate him.

Don't's:
:bulletred: Make him abusive or a sex maniac. He is not any of those characteristics.
:bulletred: Make him confrontational in a negative and/or aggressive social interaction. When it comes to social interactions, he actually puts off the negativity by maintaining a cheery demeanour.
:bulletred: Portray him as stupid or an idiot. He's carefree, which is different in meaning.
:bulletred: Make the other Nordics hate him.
:bulletred: Portray him as a drunkard who drinks 24/7. He's a heavy drinker, not a drunkard.
:bulletred: Get pissy at people who like or hate him.

[Head-Canons]

Have a head-canon for Mr Denmark? Comment below, and it shall be added! :iconyeydenmarkplz:

Note: If the head-canon is ship-related, it won't be added. Even if it's a ship I like, this journal series is about the characternot the ship.

Note 2: To avoid confusion because some head-canons may contradict each other, I will also give a shout-out to you along with your head-canons. If you don't want to be mentioned, just tell me, and give me a different name instead. =^^=

Note 3: Another nation can be mentioned in the head-canon - it just shouldn't be ship-related. It should be platonic or familial.

:bulletred:
When it comes to romantic relationships, especially with a woman, he would prefer it if the other party took the lead. Otherwise, he would not know what to do.

:bulletred: He's very good at baking, and absolutely loving breads and sugary-sweet pastries and cake. He loves making them as much as eating them. However, his food isn’t very fancy, and he's more interested in it filling up a person's belly more than the presentation of it.

:bulletred: His family is precious to him, and he won't let anything bad happen to any of them.

:bulletred: Whenever someone tries to ruffle or comb his hair down, it just springs back up.

:bulletred: He rides a bike when really stressed from work, and will keep on ringing the bike's bell. The sound of the chiming bell is actually a form of stress relief for him.

:bulletred: Sometimes in his free time, he goes bicycle touring with the Netherlands. - :iconpikablaze:

:bulletred: He has this whole love for mermaids and strongly believes in their myths, even having a statue called 'The Little Mermaid' in his country. - :iconpoi-rozen:

:bulletred: Speaking about mermaids, he complains about Disney's adaptation on The Little Mermaid saying it was 'too soft'. The same happened with Frozen as well due to it being a loose adaptation of the Snow Queen. - :iconpoi-rozen:

:bulletred: If you can't tell, he's a big fan of Hans Christian Andersen and his work. He has every book he has written (even if some are a bit old which he can't change them). - :iconpoi-rozen:

:bulletred: The reason his hair sticks up is that when it's down, it looks like Sweden's, so he sticks it up so Sweden doesn't make fun of him. - :iconpoi-rozen:

:bulletred: Be
sides completely ignoring negative gestures, he also ignores the negative parts of history, and tries to stay on the more positive side when telling them. (But when talking to someone that knows Denmark, it's a completely different story.) - :iconpoi-rozen:

:bulletred: The reason that he drinks so much is that sometimes he actually uses it as a coping mechanism, and it actually started after the Treaty of Kiel. - :iconpoi-rozen:

:bulletred: Denmark tries to be a good big brother towards his colonies, but after the events of Norway uniting with Sweden, he started to not care about them or even pay attention to them. He does regret this quite a bit and wish he could have changed that part. - :iconpoi-rozen:

:bulletred: During WWII, Denmark had to give up Greenland and even cut ties for safety reasons due to German Nazi's that were in his country at the time. - :iconpoi-rozen:

:bulletred: Back during his early Viking years, he, along with Norway, attacked England and France. - :iconpoi-rozen:

:bulletred: He likes to say he's the strongest but he knows that he'd be nothing without his friends, the Nordics. - :icon13-night-hour:

:bulletred: He enjoys teasing Norway because he knows that he is the only one who can get that kind of reaction out of the Nordics. - :icon13-night-hour:

:bulletred: He is VERY protective of the Nordics, often reminding them that if they are in trouble, to call him, no matter what. - :icon13-night-hour:

:bulletred:  Denmark and Sweden are on better terms with each other nowadays, yes, however that doesn't stop them from having massive prank-wars against each other. - :icon95jezzica:

:bulletred: Netherlands and Denmark are best friends.  - :iconsunflower-sama:

[End Note]

I really hope that this entry was fine - admittedly, I'm extremely tired and a bit stressed, but hey, it's Denmark, and he's really good at taking your stresses away. =^^=

Who shall be next? Vote here~ :iconyeydenmarkplz:
Hetalia Character Journal SeriesDue to being a bit worried about the possible new Hetalia fans that are coming in due to Hetalia: The World Twinkle releasing episodes and also the Hetalia World Stars strips (and I do not want another repeated incident where someone gets bullied by immature brats who think they're right and others are wrong just because we can all have different opinions), I figured why not start a journal series on the Hetalia characters?
Usually also because nowadays, I'm rather disturbed at how badly OOC the characters can be to the point I'm like, "Do you even read the strips? This doesn't even look like this character but a poor excuse to make your pairing/reader insert/cheap plot/bashing happen."
And though it's nice to have head-canons, it is not nice to have OOC-ness: I personally find it unprofessional and boring. Especially because the characters aren't yours to begin with. With new fans, it's excusable as because they're new,

No ship wars or flames, please.

Hope you have a wonderful and stress-free time~

Whenever I read a fanfic where Denmark does get mindlessly drunk, I always start cringing because he is one of my favorate characters and I don't like seeing him like that.

Also headcanon: I think that Denmark would be a great father if he ever could have children or at least a fun, loving uncle if he could be.
